VITAMINS & MINERALS
Kelp contains many important vitamins and minerals including: vitamins K, A, C and E in addition to vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B6 and folate (B9) and B12. It also provides small amounts of niacin (B3), and pantothenic acid. lodine is a mineral that’s present in high amounts in kelp. Other minerals include a high amount of calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium, zinc and phosphorus.
HEALTH BENEFITS
Kelp is high in fibre, vitamins, and minerals, more so than any other vegetable:
Vitamin C: An antioxidant that may help prevent illness or disease.
Calcium: Aids in bone health.
Iron: Important for healthy blood and disease resistance.
Magnesium: Essential for hundreds of biochemical reactions in your body.
lodine: Necessary to produce thyroid hormones and to maintain a healthy glandular system and metabolism. Iodine dealcifies and detoxifies the pineal gland, which is responsible for endogenous DMT (dreaming) and melatonin production. The pineal gland is thought to help in opening the third eye.
PROMOTES WEIGHT LOSS
One of the antioxidants found in seaweed, called fucoxanthin, may also help with weight loss by increasing your body’s ability to absorb fat. Kelp is one of the most alkaline foods, making it an excellent choice in today’s Western, acidic diet.
LOWERS CANCER RISK
While more research is needed, three compounds found in seaweed have shown some preliminary promise in fighting cancer:
• Fucoidan, a type of fibre found in seaweed.
• Polyunsaturated fatty acids.
• Polyphenols (antioxidants).
LOWERS HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
Some of those same compounds, such as fucoidan and fucoxanthin, may also help people who have high blood pressure. Folate, as well, has been shown to help maintain healthy blood pressure, and seaweed can be a good source of this B vitamin.
ADVERSE EFFECTS
Health experts advise that pregnant or breastfeeding women and those with kidney or thyroid disorders, such as hyperthyroidism, avoid consuming kelp.
